Condition Assessments
Steel and Wood Pole Inspections
One of our field specializations is the condition assessment of steel and wood poles. Our field crews developed methodologies for these assessments using best practices. Then, our professional engineering and financial analysts developed a 20-year asset renewal program.
In addition to the asset details and photographs, ASI conducted the following assessments for steel poles:
- External visual assessment
- External Ultrasonic Thickness (UT) testing
- Observations documenting rust and corrosion, including pit depth, size, and density in accordance with ASTM G46 and ASTM D610 Standard Practice for Evaluating Degree of Rusting on Painted Steel Surfaces
- Observations documenting maximum dent area (mm x mm) and dent depth (mm)
- Observations documenting overall coating condition, including examinations where delamination or surface defects existed
- Weld quality condition assessments with the use of Eddy Current or Magnetic Particle testing
For wood poles: - Observations of the pole sounding result
- Observations of the pole boring result
- Observations of the partial excavation result
- Documentation if preservative paste was applied
The condition Assessment consisted of the development of a comprehensive technical and financial report of each pole asset’s profile in full and at a component level. Through a thorough investigation, testing and analyses provided a benchmark of each asset’s current health and performance considering the asset’s age, design, utilization and maintenance history. They provided recommendations for repairs, rehabilitation, further studies, upgrading and/or replacement.
